Week in Tech 010917.png

In the world of tech, a lot can happen in seven days. This week IFA 2017 is taking place in Berlin, with a huge amount of new gadgets and mobile devices being unveiled. We look at the newly announced LG V30, a new record-breaking microSD card, and Samsung’s latest wearable technology.

LG V30 released to glowing reviews

As expected this week LG unveiled their latest phone, the V30, to the world. TechRadar reports that the V30 has a great streamlined design and a beautiful 6” OLED display, as well as a fingerprint sensor situated on the back of the phone. In terms of performance, the LG will have the Snapdragon 835 processor, and 4GB RAM. The V30 will come with Android Nougat – unfortunately not with Android Oreo just yet, Android’s brand new OS.

Perhaps the most exciting feature of the LG V30 is the smartphone’s dual-lens camera, designed to impress even professional photographers. That’s not an exaggeration – Game of Thrones Director of Photography, David Franco, has given the V30 his seal of approval. Franco spoke about the V30 at IFA 2017 saying “I’ve got to say its video capability is top-notch. It definitely impressed me.” The excellent camera will have a 16MP sensor with a f/1.6 aperture lens, as well as Cine Effect mode and Point Zoom.

SanDisk unveils 400GB microSD card

If you enjoy storing photos, music, and movies on your Android phone, you’ll be very excited to learn about SanDisk’s brand new microSD card, revealed at IFA 2017. With a whopping 400GB of storage, it breaks the current storage record (256GB), Mashable reports. For perspective, the entry-level MacBook Pro comes with 128GB, so it’s very impressive that a tiny card can hold so much storage.

400GB is the equivalent of 200,000 photos, 100,000 songs or 88 Full HD movies – and compared to the standard 32GB internal memory of many smartphones, having a 400GB memory card could be a real game changer. The microSD card will be on sale soon, with a $250 price tag and a 10-year warranty.

Samsung release new wearable tech

This week Samsung announced the launch of two new fitness-focused wearables – The Gear Sport smartwatch (pictured) and the Gear Fit2 Pro fitness band. According to Mashable, these two new products won’t replace Samsung’s current wrist devices, instead targeting fitness fanatics.

Both devices will have built-in GPS and 5ATM water-resistance. The Gear Sport will have a 42mm watch case and a 1.2” Super AMOLED screen, as well as a ‘Calories Consumed’ mode, a workout guide, settings to control Samsung Connect devices and Samsung Pay support.

For those who don’t need all the bells and whistles of a smartwatch, the Gear Fit2 Pro is even more fitness-focused, with a curved display to suit your wrist, a heart-rate sensor and 4 hours of battery life.
