diy fixed wireless access for broadband in rural Donegal

Hello there,

I would like to get a broadband connection at a given Eircode in rural Donegal. The property currently uses Eircom as landline and ISP. Through copper wire, the max available speeds (to my knowledge) are 56kBit/s via a dial-up connection. As this is practically useless, I am thinking about setting up a 4G external antenna in combination with a 4G router and a Three unlimited broadband contract or as the used data volume is quite small (email, surfing, maybe videochatting) with a second SIM connected to a "Bill Pay SIM Only"-contract.

However, the Three coverage maps seem differ from the coverage I actually am able to get. How can I obtain information on the location of cell towers? ("Where do I have to point the antenna?")

Best regards

Tim

Maestro

You can get the location from Comreg website but I recently learned that external antennas are not really permitted from @billbond4 so you may have to check with Comreg to see if you can use it. You might be in a bit of bother if you get caught or someone will take it down.

I find the app opensignal a good way to guesstimate the masts around you. Install it on your mobile and try it.
External antennas are allowed, it's signal boosters which are not

Perhaps something like this might help improve reception
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Huawei-Omni-AF79-Antenna/dp/B07H35XHW9/ref=mp_s_a_1_6?keywords=huawei+exter...
But wait till you get a router so you can get correct on for your needs

Lookout

This will give you the location of all mobile masts in Ireland plus information on service 3g, 4g etc and longitude and latitude

Also Sean is very helpful on antennas

For the comreg website, i dont think it lists all sites.
If its a shared site owned by an infrastructure provider it might not be on it

Thank you very much for the information. I will definitely have a look at the comreg website (also for frequency bands and on how to legally obtain/operate high-gain antennas).

In combination with an elevation chart extracted from google earth this should help a lot Smiley Happy
