broadband is in contrast to previous generations of modems (e.g. 56Kflex).
The thing to keep in mind is your cable or DSL modem is literally that a modem. It modulates a binary string from your ethernet (or wifi) side into radio frequency (typically in groups of 6MHz bands).
Whereas your 56K modem from yesteryear was limited to a <8kHz band your cable modem might use 8 or more 6MHz channels (bonded) to create a fairly high bandwidth downstream channel.
