activating eSim support on an iPhone XR

I'm currently overseas and would like to use the eSim on my iPhone XR (on billpay from 3) with a short term eSim from Three HK for data use in Asia.

I have tried to install it but I'm getting a message that it can't be used.

I have 3 questions:

1. Are bill pay iPhone's from 3 locked by default?

2. Will unlocking the phone give full access to the eSim as a secondary sim?

3. How much will it cost me to unlock the iPhone (if it is locked), I'm a long time 3 customer, but bought this new phone in February

Thank you,

@kn Three ireland don't support esims, I guess it will be next year when they start to roll out 5g that it maybe supported.
IPhones sold by 3 ireland are locked by default.
I think if you pay a few months upfront of your bill that will get you an unlock code for your phone

Re: activating eSim support on an iPhone XR

An eSim can be 4g, there’s no real reason for it to be locked. Waiting for
5g doesn’t make sense. It’s just a second sim, except in software.

It's the whole network provisioning side of things that operators need to setup first.
They will have to buy new equipment for the network to support esims
