This week, we take a closer look at the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus – the next generation of iPhone. Here are my top five favourite things about the new smartphones:
While many phone manufacturers have had wireless charging features for a while now, this is the first time Apple has provided it for their devices. Wireless charging is particularly handy for iPhone users who no longer have a headphone jack (iPhone 7 and 8 series) – allowing users to charge their phone while using their headphones.
Apple will be introducing the AirPower mat in 2018, allowing users to charge their iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods. The good news is that iPhone 8 users will also be able to charge their phones using other wireless charging stations and mats (Qi chargers), all over the world.
Apple has decided to cover the front and back of the 8 series with the most durable smartphone glass ever, in order to enable wireless charging. This casing is also precision-engineered to be splash, water and dust resistant.
Apple has called their brand new OS, iOS 11, a ‘giant step for iPhone’, and it’s hard to disagree. Available to download right now, iOS 11 will bring a whole host of new features to iPhones and iPads.
One of my favourite features is the new control centre, integrated into one screen – no more extra swiping to control your Deezer playlist! You’ll also now be able to edit screenshots, scribble in Notes, use Apple Pay within Messages, automatically optimise storage, turn pages into PDFs and use new camera modes and AR apps. In addition, Siri is smarter and the lock screen and notification centre are now one.
To download iOS 11 (available for all iPhones from iPhone 5S onwards), go to Settings > General > Software Update.
I was already a big fan of the iPhone 7 camera, but Apple have made the 8 camera even better – the 12MP camera has a larger, faster sensor, a new colour filter, deeper pixels and optical image stabilisation. The result is my pictures came out brighter and clearer than ever.
A11 Bionic chip
Apple has introduced the most powerful iPhone chip ever – the A11 Bionic. While chips aren’t always the most glamorous aspects of a new device, the A11 will improve the performance of the iPhone 8 by an impressive 25%, while maintaining great battery life. The A11 also means new AR apps will work seamlessly on the device.
Finally, a really cool feature of the iPhone 8 is its all-new screen, with True Tone technology. True Tone will automatically detect the light around you, and adjust the screen accordingly, offering a better viewing experience in all situations and environments. With a Retina HD display and a wide colour gamut, everything on screen looks more vibrant and accurate. In addition, dual-domain pixels give you a great view of the screen from almost any angle.
In conclusion, the iPhone 8 has some fantastic features and is easily one of the best phones on the market right now, rivalling the Samsung S8.
