Opening Time 28th April
It's official, the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ have been announced! You can pre-order your Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+here today.
We were lucky enough to get our hands on Samsung's newest flagship devices. Here's a run-down of the stand-out features.
The Look and Feel.
The Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ are true 'edge-to-edge' devices, with the screen covering 95% of the entire front of the device - similar to last year’s Galaxy S7 Edge, but with even more screen and smoother edges.
The Samsung S8 comes with a 5.8” Dual Edge Super AMOLED screen while the S8+ has a 6.2” Dual Edge Super AMOLED screen. When testing out HD videos on YouTube we were blown away by the screen's clarity and 'almost 3D' feel.
One of the main things you notice is the home button is gone. Samsung decided to remove the hard-key home button on the Galaxy S8 and S8+ in favour for a touch-screen home button which appears when you need it and disappears when you don’t. This may seem like a big change, but it doesn't take long to get used to, and if you use a fingerprint scanner to unlock your device, it will be no different.
Samsung has cleverly repositioned the scanners to the rear of the device beside the camera and adding additional unlocking security features such as face-recognition and iris-scanners on the front, which removes the need to have a dedicated front home button.
Both devices run on Android 7.0 Nougat and are powered by Samsung’s Exynos 8895 2.5Ghz Octa- Core Processor, 4GB of memory, 64GB of internal storage and expandable up to 256Gb SD Card support.
Both Galaxy S8 and S8+ support USB Type C for fast charging (charging from dead to full in just over 2hrs!) and fast data transfer. The Samsung Galaxy S8 has a 3,000mAh battery while its big brother, the S8+, has a 3,500mAh battery. And of course, both devices support wireless charging.
Samsung included some new software tools such as Device Maintenance which allows you to optimise your device to operate quicker. Performance Mode allows you to select various options depending on what you use your phone for. For example, switch to “game mode” to make your games run smoother; Entertainment Mode to enjoy music and videos with ultra-high sound quality and enhanced images. While High-Performance Mode allows you to experience the highest quality display settings.
A huge benefit for those of you who love your music is that Samsung has stayed true to their audiophile audience and included the 3.5mm headphone jack. While other manufacturers have decided to move forward and remove the jack, it will come as good news to a lot of people that the 3.5mm jack is here to stay in the Galaxy S8 series.
Bixby is Samsung’s new Artificial Intelligence assistant and to show you that Samsung means business with the new feature they added a dedicated Bixby button on both models, What’s interesting about Bixby is that it's not only an AI but it also takes advantage of Samsung's hardware. For example, open the camera app and point it at your cup of coffee, select the Bixby icon to scan the object immediately Bixby gets to work searching the internet for similar images, text and even locates the closest coffee shop. This is only the start of what Bixby will be capable of doing (check out the video over here).
The Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ both have a 12MP camera capable of shooting 4:3 (12M) images and Ultra High Def video (4K). These cameras really do prove it’s not a number of mega pixels but the quality of the lens that matters. Video stabilisation creates smooth flow whilst recording and zooming.
We took the S8 for a spin and the camera did not disappoint, images are crystal clear and low light level shots are best in its class, perfect for night time shooting.
These devices are also IP68 rated, dust and water proof, proper waterproof at that. allowing you to take it with you on your water related activities and not worry about it getting it wet.
If you are due to upgrade your current handset you can't go wrong. It has everything you need, and a lot of things you thought you didn't need.
